How to find work experience?

Step 1: Identify Target Companies

Begin by creating a focused shortlist of 10–15 companies that operate in your sector of interest. These organisations should have a local or regional presence to ensure that any in-person opportunities are practical and feasible for you to attend.

Step 2: Research Work Experience Opportunities

For each company on the list, research whether they offer a structured work experience programme for sixth formers.

  • If Yes:

    • Note down key details, including application deadlines, duration, entry requirements, and questions asked

    • Track progress to avoid missing out on deadlines

  • If No:

    • Find the person responsible for early careers or outreach - ideally by name and direct email address (from the company’s website or LinkedIn)

    • Send a personalised cold email asking about potential opportunities

'I was able to find out the life of an architect, working on multiple projects. I found out that being an architect doesn't mean sitting in an office all day, but also visiting sites and analysing them to provide the best service.
Don't be shy to ask questions and make sure you keep asking questions. Try to make friends with the colleagues and keep close to your supervisor so they get to know you better.'
